Singapore Airlines is celebrating a swag of awards including World’s Best Airline for the fourth time in the annual Skytrax awards.

Singapore claims fourth crown

Singapore Airlines has claimed it’s fourth World’s Best Airlines award in the annual Skytrax Awards.

The airline got the nod ahead of last year’s winner, Qatar Airways, for the top position as Asian airlines dominated the top 10 with seven coming from the region. Lufthansa was the only European airline to make the list.

Singapore Airlines also took out the awards for Best First Class, Best Airline in Asia and best First Class Seat (for its recently launched A380 suites) in what was a big night for the carrier.

“A key ‘wow’ factor for customers is consistency, said Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted, “And this proved to a real asset for Singapore Airlines who scored highly across both product and service.”

There’s been a lot happening this year for Singapore Airlines and there’s more to come as it relaunches the “world’s longest flight route” in resuming non-stop flights between Singapore and New York. The airline will fly the first Airbus A350-ULR (for Ultra Long Range) on the 19-hour 16,700km route. The flight will feature only business and premium economy seating.

In the past year the airline also rolled out new seats for its A380 superjumbos, including its first double-beds in business class.

No surpise to travel industry experts

“It’s no surprise Singapore Airlines have won for the fourth time,” says Tamara Wetherall, a seasoned team leader with travel management company CT Connections. Ms Wetherall was a special guest on the the air carrier’s inaugural direct flight from Melbourne to Wellington in New Zealand in May.

“Singapore Airlines really have fantastic First and Business Classes, very spacious and offering the ultimate comfort factor with a control panel that converts your seat into a full flat bed. The flight attendants are excellent and always close by to attend any requests.”

Not all bad news for Qatar

For Qatar Airways, despite losing the title of World’s Best Airline, it claimed awards including ‘World’s Best Airline in the Middle East’ as well as ‘World’s Best First Class Airline Lounge’ and the ‘World’s Best Business Class’ – the revolutionary Qsuite featuring private seats that can join to form double beds and four-way meeting tables.

Other winners included: Emirates for Best Airline Staff in the Middle East and Best Inflight Entertainment; Etihad scored Best First Class in the Middle East; Hainan Airlines scooped the pool with seven awards including Best Airline in China; and Air New Zealand scored three including Best Premium Economy Class, Best Premium Economy Seat, and Best Airline Cabin Cleanliness in Australia/Pacific.
