If ever there was a great way to give your bike another life, it’s by supporting Bicycles For Humanity. It’s also an amazing way to see Africa on two wheels. Vatsala Gurunath reports.
True what they say…”there are no traffic jams along the extra mile…”
Only some walk those 30 extra miles to fulfill basic human rights such as water, school or healthcare.
In Africa and a few other developing countries, children and adults spend many tiresome hours each day walking to bring home water, firewood, get to school and employment, or even to get access to primary health care.
In developed countries like Australia and others, hundreds of bikes lie unused or are disposed for lack of use. These bicycles could be the gift of mobility to many people empowering them to access basic human rights. Mobility is not just transport infrastructure, but about overcoming the social, economic, political and physical barriers to movement.
This is where not-for-profit initiatives like B4H – Bicycles for Humanity – come in. Bicycles For Humanity Melbourne with Intrepid Travel have organised an exciting Namibian Cycling trip, giving us an opportunity to give the gift of mobility to those in need in Africa.
While the initiative is great, it gets better when you get to discover the highlights of Namibia and Zambia on a once-in-a-lifetime cycling trip in southern Africa.
Jump into the saddle and encounter the dramatic landscapes of Twyfelfontein, soak up the laidback coastal vibes of seaside Swakopmund, and meet the nomadic Ovahimba tribespeople.
With wildlife-studded visits to some of the region’s best national parks, including Etosha Nationa Park, Palmwag Nature Reserve and the mighty Victoria Falls, this is a unique safari experience.
This exclusive itinerary is designed by Intrepid Travels in collaboration with Bicycles for Humanity and the tour will visit the bicycle workshops in Opuwo, Katima Mulilo and Livingstone.
Bicycles for Humanity is also supported by The Intrepid Foundation, which focuses on providing developing communities in Africa with access to bicycles. These bicycles give locals access to better employment opportunities, food and healthcare, and allows communities to establish bicycle workshops that act as self-sufficient small businesses.
The cost of the trip includes a $200 tax deductible donation, which will also be matched by The Intrepid Foundation.
Indulge your sense of adventure and make a difference with Bicycles For Humanity. Click here for the itinerary and details of the trip.
