Sydneysiders, buckle up! Virgin Australia is flying you to Hong Kong as the Year of the Dog continues to deliver the good news.
Daily flights to Hong Kong from mid-2018
Virgin Australia has announced plans for daily flights between Sydney and Hong Kong from the middle of 2018, a route that will increase the airline’s presence into Greater China.
Virgin Australia Group CEO John Borghetti said: “Expanding our presence into Greater China is a key pillar of our international strategy, and today we are building on the positive momentum created since the launch of our Melbourne-Hong Kong flights.”
“Virgin Australia has been ‘shaking up’ the Australia-Hong Kong market by introducing lower fares and its award-winning inflight product and service since it began its first Melbourne-Hong Kong flight last year,” Mr Borghetti added.
Hong Kong Airlines will be the alliance partner connecting Virgin Australia with the onward flights.
Room for another player
CT Connections Travel Group Director Gary Reichenberg said there was room for another player on this route.
“Virgin Australia has stepped in bringing in choice and creating competition,” said Mr Reichenberg.
“The newly announced service is a convenient opportunity for Australian travellers who are increasingly flying to the ever-growing Asian commercial hub. It also facilitates Virgin Australia’s presence in Greater China.”
Currently, Virgin’s Melbourne-Hong Kong flights operate five days a week. Subject to authorisation, Virgin Australia plans to operate daily return services between Sydney-Hong Kong. Both services are run on VA’s dual aisle Airbus A330-200 aircraft, featuring the world’s best Business Class – ‘The Business’.
More advantages for flyers
Appreciating the availability of a choice and frequent flights to the fastest growing route, Richard Wignall (CT Connections Head of Sales) said the Sydney-Hong Kong service brought in several advantages for Australian travellers.
“The current duopoly on this route will be challenged and fares may become much more competitive with increased flights. Also, this service will connect with Virgin Atlantic Airway’s flights to London,” Mr Wignall said.
Subject to approval, the Virgin Australia Sydney-Hong Kong flights to take to the skies by mid-2018.
